Custom Knee Bracing

At AESM, we provide custom fitting for knee braces and other braces.

There are two common conditions that necessitate a custom knee brace:

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee

The ACL is the major stabilizing ligament of the knee.  An ACL injury can lead to rotational instability of the knee, increasing the risk for further knee injuries.  Off the shelf bracing is not designed to reduce knee rotation; this can only be accomplished by custom bracing.  Patients with acute ACL injuries should have a brace made to reduce instability and facilitate recovery, and patients who've had ACL reconstructive surgery should have a brace made to protect their new ACL from injury.

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of cartilage in the knee.  It usually occurs with aging, through "wear and tear", but it can also happen after severe injuries to the knee, even in younger people.  Studies have shown that if your knee alignment puts more stress on one side of the knee, and if there is more arthritis in that side, wearing a custom made brace can shift weight to the good side of the knee, and help to reduce pain and improve knee function.

We also do custom bracing for elbow injuries and other injuries.
